Slipper settling in as a Brumby

The colours might look a bit different, but the Brumbies crest is starting to look familiar for James Slipper as he begins his journey in Canberra.

The 80-cap Wallaby made the move from Brisbane this offseason, signing a two-year deal with Australia’s most successful Super Rugby side, and has already began to settle in his new surroundings with the Brumbies.

“It’s humbling to sign with such a good squad and such a good club, “Slipper said, speaking to media at Brumbies HQ.

“A lot of players come down here and become better players and that’s my goal, to improve as a player, both on and off the field.”

“One thing I’ve noticed right from the start here is that everybody is one the same level. Whether you’re one of the young blokes or a Wallaby, you’re treated the same and I love that.”

A leader in both action and word, Slipper cut a commanding figure as he faced the local press.

The opportunity to be back in Super Rugby was clearly something that meant a lot to Slipper, but the talented prop’s only focus was on his teammates and helping to build a winning culture with the Brumbies.

“I just want to contribute wherever I can,” Slipper explained.

“I want to play good rugby and hopefully be involved in success for the Brumbies. That’s what I’m working hard for and I just want to be able to do my job for my teammates. “

Figuring out Canberra’s roundabouts and where to get the best flat white aside, but 
the change of scenery is one which Slipper feels happened at the right time.

“I’ve only had a couple days training here, but I’ve really enjoyed it, “Slipper explained.

“Obviously, I’ve been at the Reds for 12 years so it’s a big change but it’s one I probably needed.”

“I’ll always be grateful to Queensland, it’s where I grew up, but now it’s about the Brumbies, investing in this great club and looking forward.”

While competition for places in the front-row will be fierce this season, Slipper will likely share the load alongside Wallaby pair Scott Sio and Allan Alaalatoa.

“I see myself as a loosehead but honestly, I’m one of those players who just wants to be on the field,” Slipper said.

“Whatever position I don’t mind much. You can chuck me in at hooker if you want. Don’t know about the throwing though.”
