Six Nations Countdown: Day 2 - 2 Irish flyhalves, 2 last-gasp drop-goal victories

Few players possess the nerves of steel it requires to drop the ball on the foot in the heat of battle at the death in the hope of snatching victory from the gaping jaws of defeat.

At the Millennium Stadium on 21 March 2009, a wonderful Irish outfit led by Paul O’Connell battled the Welsh with the Grand Slam in sight. With only 5 minutes to go, the Irish found themselves one point behind on the scoreboard before a mistake by Welsh flyhalf Stephen Jones saw the green jerseys in their opponents’ 22m area.

Yeoman work from the Irish forwards gave flyhalf Ronan O’Gara the opportunity to put himself in the perfect position to slot a drop-goal and give his side the lead:

It was brutally tense in the dying seconds of Ireland’s 2018 Six Nations Round 1 match-up with France in Saint-Denis as flyhalf Johnny Sexton devised his plan to pull Ireland’s game out of the fire.


There were more than 82 minutes on the clock as Ireland rumbled up field and the scoreboard showed 13-12 in favour of the French before Sexton worked his magic:
