Should Francois Louw miss the Boks final two Rugby Championship matches?
- 1993
Following the Springboks first win in New Zealand since 2009 Rassie Erasmus returned home with the majority of the Springbok squad ahead of the Rugby Championship rest week.
However, Willie le Roux and Francois Louw players did not make their final stop in the Republic but travelled back to England where they are likely to feature in this weekend's Premiership Rugby action.
This is not the first time, this year, that Louw has been required to do this after he returned to England after the Springboks clash in Mendoza against Argentina and was used off the bench against Bristol Bears a week later.
Louw has racked up some hefty air mileage over the past month with Todd Blackadder saying that the travel took its toll the last time the Rugby Championship was on a break.
"We're going to see how he rolls and whether the time zones affect him, because we felt the effects in the Bristol game." he told somersetlive
The final two rounds of the Rugby Championship clash with Bath's fixtures against Saracens and Exeter Chiefs and the club is hoping to have the flanker for those two matches.
Should Louw stay in Bath it could be beneficial for all three parties involved and here's why:
Louw could get a much-needed break this weekend and would be available to Bath for their next two matches and would not need to travel again, while Rassie Erasmus could test his depth on the side of the scrum and give another player/s a chance to prove themselves.
Looking in the Springbok squad young Bulls' flanker Marco van Staden has been limited to just 21 minutes off the bench against Argentina while Sikhumbuzo Notshe has not been in the squad since the third match against England in June.
A real outside shout will be the recall of Ulster flanker Marcell Coetzee, who last featured for the Springboks ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Coetzee has been in fine form for Ulster so far this season after returning from two-lengthy injury layoffs.
Timing is often everything and the timing could not be better for Erasmus if he were to recall Coetzee as the flanker is already in the country with Ulster and could just stay in South Africa following Ulster's match with the Cheetahs this weekend.
However, Ulster may be reluctant to let their star loose forward go as he would miss key matches against Irish rivals Munster and Connacht.
