Scotland vs Portugal: A statistical look

The second full round of fixtures in this year’s Autumn Nations Series saw a mix of tight clashes and resounding victories – we take a look at some of the key stats from the weekend.

The early Saturday fixture in Edinburgh saw Scotland host Portugal – one of the surprise packages at last year’s Rugby World Cup. However, Os Lobos were unable to repeat their heroics from 2023, finding Scotland simply unstoppable.

There was a real contrast in the ball carrying for both teams, with Portugal (124) only making six carries fewer than Scotland (130) but gaining less than half as many metres (269-680). They also made just three line breaks to Scotland’s 10.

That’s not to say there weren’t impressive performances from the Portuguese players. Nicolas Martins made 20 tackles with a 100% success rate – only Fraser McReight made more without missing across the weekend’s fixtures, while Raffaele Storti’s seven defenders beaten was a just round-high along with Tommaso Menoncello.

Storti’s opposite number Darcy Graham grabbed the headlines from a Scottish point of view. He crossed the try line for the 17th time in his last 10 tests and for the 29th time overall for Scotland, moving level with Duhan van der Merwe as his nation’s all-time top try scorer.
