Saracens retain Aviva Premiership title
Saracens became only the 3rd club to complete a domestic and European double as they saw off Exeter Chiefs 28-20 at Twickenham this afternoon.
Saracens controlled the opening 30 of the game, Chiefs were making mistakes and Owen Farrell was on form with the boot, adding 2 penalties before Steenson responded for the underdogs.
Farrell added another to make it 9-3, then Saracens were finally rewarded for their dominance. With a Saracens advantage, Farrell spotted a gap in behind the Chiefs defence, grubbered through and Duncan Taylor latched onto the ball to score his 4th try for Saracens.
It went from bad to worse for Chiefs as just minutes later, Chris Wyles slipped through the defence and scored in the corner. Poor Chiefs defending and they found themselves 23-3 down.
Steenson added 3 for the Chiefs on the stroke at half time and the players went into the changing room at 23-6.
Chiefs needed a reaction in the second half and after a few changes in the front row, a reaction is what they got. Alec Hepburn was at the back of a strong driving maul and dotted down to give Exeter hope.
The west country side, who were in their 1st ever Aviva Premiership final, kept crashing into the Sarries defence and were getting no luck, until the final 7 minutes when Henry Slade spotted a gap in the defence and fed Jack Nowell in the corner who finished superbly. Steenson converted and it was set for a grandstand finish with the score 23-20 to Saracens.
However that was as good as it got for the Chiefs, man of the match Alex Goode ended any hopes of a comeback after he finished off a good team move from Saracens with 2 minutes to go, with the final score 28-20.
Saracens retained their title, capping off a truly sensational season for Mark McCall's side.
