Rugby's Biggest Bruisers - Part Two
- 5111
We continue to look at some of rugby's biggest bruisers after our first set of three bruisers.
Today's picks include an Englishman, New Zealander and a monstrous Samoan.
Colin Meads
Although Colin “Pinetree” Meads’ playing days are long over, the legend of arguably the toughest ever All Black lives on. One story that gives testament to his extraordinary grit was when he broke his arm during a mid-week game in South Africa, but continued to play on. Afterwards, while his arm was being attended to by a doctor, the only words he muttered were, “At least we won the bloody game.”
Wade Dooley
Known as the Blackpool Tower, the 6ft 8in police officer never stood back for anyone on the rugby pitch. During his career he turned out 57 times for England and twice for the British & Irish Lions. His teammates fondly remember an occasion when Dooley was knocked to the floor by his French counterpart. Upon rising to his feet, Dooley’s voice boomed out, “Ref! Do not send that f#cker off!”
Alesana Tuilagi
The mere sight of this monstrous Samoan on attack or defence was enough to send a chill down the spines of opponents. Despite his size, Tuilagi played his rugby on the wing and bashed his way into legendary status. He played the majority of his club rugby for Leicester Tigers (145 caps) and represented Samoa on 37 occasions.
