Report: Wasps 25-20 Exeter Chiefs
- 1261
A dry coventry Sunday played host to Wasps v Exeter this weekend. This game was always going to be an exciting affair and expections were well and truley met with a fantastic display from both sides.
It was Exeter who looked the more promising in the first half with a try from the big number 8 Thomas Waldren just three minutes in. Exeter outhalf Henry Slade kicked a penalty in the 14th minute to bring the score to 10-0, worrying signs for the Wasps early on. Ex Newcastle Falcons and Leinster man Jimmy Gopperth got the Wasps off the mark with a convincing kick minutes after Slades penalty. Gopperth added to his tally with a wonderfully worked try by number 9 Dan Robson who managed to jink away from two Exeter plays before laying the ball off to Gopperth who finished the try with an in and out step. Exeter had an almost immediate response with Will Chudley working the blindside well. Wasps went into the half trailing but it was still anyone's game.
The second half saw Wasps come out firing with Dan Robson grabbing a try running a great support line for Wasps flyer Christian Wade. Wasps then turned on the heat with a try from new lad Tommy Taylor. Both teams made a rake of substitutes in the second half and it was the Wasps subs who were more effective as they managed to see out their win. Exeter battled hard but just came up short with the game finishing Wasps 25 Exeter 20.
Man of the match - Tommy Taylor
The newly signed hooker proved he was a worthy signing with accurate throws and a physical pressence around the park. He manged to soke up a couple of big hits and managed to grab a try under the posts, no doubt Dai Young will be delighted with the new signing.
