Moana Pasifika to be axed from Super Rugby Pacific

Moana Pasifika are reportedly set to exit Super Rugby Pacific at the end of this season due to funding issues, reducing the competition to 10 teams from 2027. Players were informed of the decision, following ongoing concerns about the financial stability of majority owners Pasifika Medical Association. The league has already shrunk after the Melbourne Rebels were dissolved in 2024, though their owners are still pursuing legal action against Rugby Australia.

Founded in 2022 with support from New Zealand Rugby and World Rugby, Moana enjoyed a high point last season with Ardie Savea’s standout performances. However, his move to Japan in 2026 and the team’s poor results this season have raised doubts about their competitiveness. The franchise has also struggled to establish a permanent home base or secure consistent sponsorship.

If confirmed, Moana’s exit would add to ongoing challenges for Super Rugby, even as it prepares for major events like the upcoming Super Round in Christchurch. In the meantime, Moana head to Sydney on Friday night for their clash with the Waratahs, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expected to attend. A reduced 10-team format could allow for a full 18-game home-and-away season, potentially boosting revenue for clubs.
