Matt Toomua Set For Wallabies Recall
- 2715
According to a number of reports in New Zealand and Australia, Leicester Tigers playmaker Matt Toomua could feature for the Wallabies during the Bledisloe Cup and the Rugby Championship this year.
The former Brumby has returned to Australia to finalise his deal two and half year deal with the Melbourne Rebels.
He has spoken with Wallabies coach Michael Cheika about potentially playing in the first Test of the Rugby Championship in Sydney on August 18.
He will play for Leicester this season but the benefit of his future move to the Rebels is that it makes him immediately available for Wallabies duties if required.
The 28-year-old is set to join the Rebels in the latter stages of the 2019 Super Rugby season, with the hopes of making the Wallabies 2019 Rugby World Cup squad.
A return to Canberra to pair up with Leali'ifano was also on the cards but the former Brumby has cited family reasons for his decision to join the Melbourne Rebels instead.
The Wallabies' outside centre injury woes with Tevita Kuridrani and Samu Kerevi has forced the Wallabies into a back-line rethink. That could open the door for Toomua's return.
It's understood Toomua is a real chance to play for the Wallabies against the All Blacks, marking what would be an unusual return to Australia given he still has playing commitments abroad.
Toomua's inclusion could see Israel Folau filling the 13 jersey with Kurtley Beale shifting to fullback and Toomua at 12. Reece Hodge could also fill any of those those jerseys as well.
