Leicester take risk on new deal for injured Tom Croft

Tom Croft, the injury-prone England and Lions flanker who is recovering from
shoulder surgery, has agreed a new contract next season at Leicester Tigers.

Richard Cockerill, the Leicester director of rugby, admitted that the deal was
a risk because Croft, 29, has undergone surgery for a third successive
season.

“Is it a risk on our behalf? Yes, but that’s life,” Cockerill said.

He hopes
Croft will be fit for September, although that looks too late for the player
to challenge for a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Cockerill said: “When Tom’s fit, he is a world-class player.
