South Africa captain Hanno Liebenberg highlighted the effect that the Italian heat took on his team after they triumphed 33-5 over U20 World Championship hosts Italy.
The Baby Boks had an early shock when Italy took the lead through their winger Yannick Agbasse, but the 2012 champions rallied to finish the game with five tries.
In the driving rain South Africa’s rolling maul was incredibly effective and a major source of their points.
Liebenberg overall felt his side were a little off the pace while noticing an obvious improvement in his side’s play during the second half.
"It was a rusty start for us and we have no excuses. Italy always play fast running rugby and did well,” said Liebenberg.
"We can improve our line-outs and ball control, although the ball was wet and it was difficult conditions. We did better in the second half, but the first half was poor.”
South Africa’s win moved them to the top of Pool B ahead of Australia.
