How the papers reacted to Ireland's win over the All Blacks

We take a look at how some of the papers around the world reacted to Ireland's win over the All Blacks.

'Peter O'Mahony's bottomless courage epitomised Ireland on a night of nights' - Irish Independent Roy Curtis

Roy Curtis was amoung the many journalists who highlighted Peter O'Mahony's performance against the All Blacks. He wrote 'If a UFO was reported streaking across Irish skies last week, here, it a very large green man who most closely resembled the celestial citizen of a distant planet.' 

Curtis praised the blindside flanker's performance along with the remainder of the Irish back rows saying O'Mahony performance 'was the very definition of superior leadership, inspiring.'

Maginificent Ireland claim historic win - The Sunday Times Stephen Jones

'Wonderful' was the word Stephen Jones used, regularly, to describe the test in Dublin. Jones went on to dub some of the individual performances as 'Superhuman' as he paid homage to the likes of Johnny Sexton, Robe Kearney, Bundee Aki, Devin Toner and Tadhg Furlong before signalling out Peter O'Mahony for his heroics, before naming Jacob Stockdale as his star man from the clash.

Van Royen wrote that New Zealanders should panic following the All Blacks lose to Ireland saying that Steve Hansen is still figuring out what the best make-up of his side is before saying 'the sooner he decides to super glue the No 15 jersey on Ben Smith's back the better.' 

Van Royen also commented on Ireland and said 'losing to a serious World Cup contender will never cause him [Steve Hansen] to panic. This wasn't Italy. ' 

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt's stock rises after masterminding Irish win over All Blacks - New Zealand Herald Liam Napier

Liam Napier touched on Joe Schmidt's creativity and the serious threat his side have become for next year's World Cup. "Proud yet understated, Joe Schmidt was in no mood to gloat after masterminding another famous win over the All Blacks. Rather, he instead pulled out his best defensive fend to downplay the World Cup favourites tag swiftly bestowed on Ireland." wrote Napier. 

Ireland outstanding in epic victory - The Sunday Times David Walsh

David Walsh dubbed Ireland's performance as 'both heroic and calm' saying that Joe Schmidt's side lived up to their expectations. Walsh went on to talk about Joe Schmidt's journey to the Ireland head coach role and commented saying that under the New Zealand Ireland have become a 'clinical, intelligent and skilful rugby team'.

Mick Cleary and Charlie Morgan touched on Ireland's fantastic defence against the All Blacks saying 'The All Blacks didn't score a try. Now there's a sentence that has rarely been penned over the last decade and encapsulates just how stirring Ireland's defence wasa, built on the credo that they shall not pass. And they didn't.' 

Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony received high praise from the pair.

The Sydney Morning Herald stated that Ireland's win over the All Blacks on Saturday was far more impressive, than the one in Chicago in 2016, 'New Zealand was closer to full strength and far more aware of Ireland's threats.'

All Blacks stunned by Ireland in thrilling Dublin test - New Zealand Herald Gregor Paul

Paul was full of praise for Ireland after their win over his countrymen writing 'Ireland can now claim to be the best team in the world after producing a stunning performance that was brave, creative and relentless. They deserved the win and with it, they deserve to be seen as world rugby's best team even if the rankings don't agree.' 

He also touched on the All Blacks performance saying the world champions were 'almost as good and that is something that will hurt. The word almost.'

Ireland’s 113-year wait over as O’Mahony and Marmion make magic - The Guardian Andy Bull

Andy Bull looked back and some narrow losses Ireland have recieved in the past against the All Blacks before turning his attention to game on Saturday.

'Ask around Dublin, or any other place Irish fans were watching on Saturday night, and they will tell you the wait was worth it'. he wrote. 

Bull was another journalist who highlighted O'Mahony's performance saying 'Peter O’Mahony won man of the match just because of all that dirty work he did in defence, diving down into the breakdown like he was ferreting around to find a set of keys his kids had dropped into the waste bin.'
