The Rugby World Cup got underway as hosts Japan required a strong second half performance to beat Russia 30-10 in a Pool A clash. Russia got off to a dream start with an early try from a Japanese error at the back to lead 7-0. Japan responded with their first score shortly after, but would have to wait until just before halftime to cross for their second try to take a narrow 12-7 advantage into the break. Japan kicked an early second half penalty and scored their third try a few minutes later to give themselves some breathing room at 20-7. Russia pulled three points back with a penalty to reduce the deficit to ten heading into the final quarter. Japan would finish the stronger of the sides, slotting a penalty before running in their fourth try with ten minutes remaining to seal a bonus point victory.
