Griquas put Western Province away

Griquas moved into the top four of the Currie Cup after a 46-25 home win over Western Province in round 13.


The sides traded early penalties before a Griquas try midway through the first half saw them in front. Griquas then picked up a yellow card and Western Province capitalized with a try to level matters at 10-10.

Griquas hit back with a try from the restart, with Western Province picking up a yellow card in the process. A Western Province try around the half hour mark was followed by a late first half penalty to see the visitors edge in front 18-17.

However, Griquas would have the final say of the half, with a try with the final play giving them a 24-18 lead at the break. Griquas started the second half as they ended the first, with a try making it 31-18.

Another Griquas score followed as the hosts opened up a 36-18 lead with around half an hour remaining. Western Province got back into the match with a try after 63 minutes to reduce the deficit to 11 points. With just under ten minutes to play, Griquas slotted a penalty and ran in a late sixth try to seal the victory to move up into third position in the standings, while Western Province dropped to fifth.
