Clubs against England recall for Steffon Armitage

Stuart Lancaster, the England head coach, would face extreme opposition from the domestic clubs and some of his players if he were to pick Steffon Armitage, the Toulon flanker, in his World Cup squad.

Lancaster’s task in steering England through their “group of death” this year became arguably more challenging yesterday when the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) announced a change of policy that would allow it to select Matt Giteau, one of the smartest ballplayers in European rugby, who has been in exile from his national side since 2011, when he signed to play for Toulon, the French club.
