More than 30 years have passed since a French journalist turned up at Philiphaugh to meet John Rutherford, the Scotland fly-half, and was so taken aback by the ramshackle surroundings that he flatly refused to believe that the player, then reckoned to be the best playmaker on earth, could have come from such a place.
