Canterbury win their 16th NPC title
- 101
Canterbury mounted a huge comeback in the second half to secure their 16th NPC title and are now trailing Auckland by one with the North Island side on 17 titles. This win secures back to back titles for the region.
The defending champions had home advantage at One NZ Stadium in Christchurch on Monday, but the Taniwha arrived with plenty of belief after a remarkable season that saw them lift, and then twice defend, the Ranfurly Shield for the first time since 1978.
In round four, Northland stunned Canterbury 36-12 in Christchurch to claim the Log o’ Wood, handing the red and blacks their first loss of the season, and laying down a marker for what was to come in today’s final.
Rugby fans from across the country flocked to Christchurch and to One NZ Stadium, as the game sold out prior to kick off.
Canterbury scored 19 unanswered points in the final 18 minutes to take the title home after Northland, playing in their first ever NPC Final, took a 10-21 lead into half time.
