Can Edinburgh create History on Friday night?
- 1131
Since the introduction of European Cup competitions in 1996, there have been winners from England, France,Wales and Ireland but never from Scotland. On Friday night Edinburgh have the opportunity of becoming the first Scottish club to win a European Cup competition.
Leaving aside the poor 6 Nations campaign for the Scottish national side, The two Scottish clubs, Edinburgh and Glasgow have both enjoyed successful seasons. Glasgow sit top of the Pro12 at the moment and look on course for a home semi-final while Edinburgh are still in the hunt for a Champions Cup place for next season and have made it to their first ever Challenge Cup final.
Before Edinburgh’s semi-final win against the Dragons, their finest hour was in the 2011/12 season when they made it to a Heineken Cup semi-final after defeating four-time champions Toulouse in the quarters. However a semi-final was as good as it got with Ulster securing the win in the end. Now three years later, they are one game away from winning the Challenge Cup and becoming the first Scottish club to win a European Competition.
However it is not going to be a walk in the park as they take on 2006 Challenge Cup champions Gloucester. The Cherry and Whites have been the form side in the competition and are looking to become one of few sides to win the Challenge Cup without losing a single game.
Edinburgh head coach Alan Solomans, will be hoping the occasion doesn’t get to his players and he will be telling them that they might not get an opportunity like this again. All of Scotland will be watching on Friday night with bated breath, hoping to see Mike Coman lift the Challenge Cup at the Stoop.
