Autumn Nations Cup goes behind Amazon paywall

Amazon Prime has been unveiled as the broadcast partner for the new Autumn Nations Cup in November.

The streaming services will broadcast 14 of the 16 matches in the competition while Channel 4 will broadcast England v Ireland, Ireland v Wales and Ireland v Georgia with the highlights all on Channel four too. Ireland’s home games, which make up the Guinness Series 2020 will be available on RTÉ in Ireland. Channel 4 will also show exclusive live coverage of the inaugural competition’s opening match between Ireland and Wales in the UK.

Every game, apart from Ireland’s three pool matches which will be shown live on Channel 4 in the UK and live on RTÉ in Ireland, will be available exclusively on Prime Video in the UK. The fixtures for the eight-team Autumn Nations Cup have been confirmed with Ireland to start the ball rolling against Wales in Dublin on Friday 13 November with the action taking place over four weekends between 13 November and 6 December 2020.

The unique eight-team competition involves the Six Nations countries, as well as Georgia and Fiji in two pools of four. The format see two pools of four – Group A will include England, Ireland, Wales and Georgia with Group B comprising of France, Scotland, Italy and Fiji.

The move to Amazon is a bid to build a more sustainable financial future for rugby in the North with reports suggesting that the streaming service is eyeing up other top rugby tournaments as the sport’s officials seek ways to increase income amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
