All Blacks 30-15 B&I Lions - Player Ratings

All Blacks 30-15 B&I Lions - Player Ratings

1. Mako Vunipola - 6

A solid performance from the loose head where did little wrong making 7 carries & 11 tackles in his 51 minute stint.

2. Jamie George - 6

George failed to make an impact in the loose as he usually does but an impressive 17 tackles in 6 minutes is a respectable performance from the Sarries man.

3. Tadhg Furlong - 5

The Wexford man was full of energy right from kick off but some sloppy mistakes & poor decisions let him down a bit on his first test cap for the Lions.

4. Alun-Wyn Jones - 5

A much debated selection from Gatland mid-week, Jones offered little in attack only making 3 carries while making 9 tackles in defence.

5. George Kruis - 5

Kruis has rarely put a foot wrong on tour so far but some needless knock ons today killed momentum at times for the Lions

6. Peter O'Mahony - 6

Given the responsibility of captain today for the Lions, O'Mahony worked hard around the field but made way for Warburton after 60 mins or so.

7. Sean O'Brien - 7

The stand out forward today for the Lions. Bruising carries & 44 metres gained alongside a great try for the Tullow man.

8. Toby Faletau - 6

Faletau was non stop in defence today making 20 tackles today. Would like to have seen more of his carrying game but still a brave performance.

9. Conor Murray - 6

Murray never fails to do the basics well. Some intelligent kicking from hand and kept the attack alive throughout the game.

10. Owen Farrell - 5

Farrell got the nod in his preferred 10 shirt and started well but some loose passes gave an out of sorts performance for the European Player of the Year.

11. Elliot Daly - 7

A surprise selection midweek. Daly proved his worth with some electric running down the left wing & great part played in Sean O'Brien's try.

12. Ben Te'o - 7

Te'o's physicality caused major issues for the All Blacks in the first half with strong carries & some big shots on the ABs attackers.

13. Jonathon Davies - 6

Starting his 4th consecutive test for the Lions, Davies did well to keep the ball alive for Sean O'Brien's try.

14. Anthony Watson - 6

Watson's pace caused trouble for the All Blacks in the first half and prevented an almost certain try early on with a goal keeper like catch on Barrett's crossfield kick.

15. Liam Williams - 6

Williams was electric in attack for the Lions first try breaking all the way from his own 22. An unforgivable dropped catch for Ioane's second try stained an otherwise good performance.

Honourable mentions from the bench

18. Sinckler - 5

Sinckler will be eyeing up the number 3 jersey for next week's test. Did well when he came on for the last 20 minutes with his dynamic style of play.

21. Webb - 6

Probably unfortunate not to get onto the field earlier and test the All Blacks tiring defence. Was rewarded for his efforts in the last play with a smart try.

22. Sexton - 5

Gatland looked to go for broke bringing on Sexton & moving Farrell to 12. The momentum for the Lions filtered out of the game around this time and the Leinster man had little impact.

1. Joe Moody - 8

Massive 53 minute shift. Scrummaged powerfully, carried 5 times for a gain of 25m and chipped in on defence with 9 tackles.

2. Codie Taylor - 8

Opened the scoring with a fine try in the corner after picking up a poor pass. Caused a nuisance at the line-out and showed he's a more than able deputy to Dane Coles.

3. Owen Franks - 7

Anchored the powerful All Blacks with merit. Chipped in with his fair share of carries and tackles while offering his energy in attack.

4. Brodie Retallick - 7

Mammoth effort from Brodie at the heart of the New Zealand engine room. 12 carries, 6 tackles and 35m in attack, brilliant all round display.

5. Sam Whitelock - 7

Dominated the Lions at the line-out and excellent breakdown contribution. Disrupted the Lions at set-piece and chipped in with one steal. Brings a real physicality to the All Blacks pack.

6.  Jerome Kaino - 7

Freak of an athlete. Dominated the Lions forwards in all facets of the game tonight. High tackle count and his work rate was relentless throughout.

7.  Sam Cane - 8

A real nuisance at the break-down. Cane seemed to be everywhere tonight. 13 carries and 9 tackles says it all.

8. Kieran Read - 9

The All Blacks talisman. In only his 5th game in 7 months. Read led by example making 18 carries on his return, with 13 having a gainline success and amassing 8 tackles. Produced an incredible offload for the game-deciding score.

9. Aaron Smith - 7

Impressive contribution from the AB's 9 tonight. Pulled the strings and was a real threat around the fringes with his ability to find space.

10. Beauden Barrett - 9

Majestic to watch once again. Beauden Barrett confirmed that he is the real deal. 100% kicking accuracy off the tee, chipping in with 15 points as New Zealand remain unbeaten at Eden Park since 1994.

11. Rieko Ioane - 9

Two tries on his first All Black start. Gifted with lightning pace and a natural ability to cross the white-wash. Has scored three tries now against the Lions. Repaid the faith shown in him by Steve Hansen. Scary potential.

12. SBW - 7

Incredibly physical performance from Sonny Bill tonight, carried hard at the line and adjusted well to the back-line re schuffle. Enjoyed a heavy weight battle in midfield against Ben Te'o.

13. Ryan Crotty - N/A

Crotty was substituted in the 33rd minute after a hamstring strain. A tough blow for the centre who had started to grow into the game.

14. Israel Dagg - 7

Classy performance. Produced a sumptuous pass to set-up Ioane in the corner and was astute defensively as he produced a wonderful try saving tackle on Elliot Daly.

15. Ben Smith - N/A

Left the field after 26 minutes after suffering a blow to the head. Showed how deadly a back field runner he can be. A real doubt now for the rest of the series.

Honourable mentions from the bench

20. Ardie Savea - 6

All-action display from the Hurricane tonight, possesses an uncanny ability to break the first tackle and gain the hard yards. Has firmly put his hand up for a starting role next week.

21. TJ Perenara - 7

Added energy to the All Blacks. Chipped in with a crucial turnover when the Lions were rolling. Box kicked accurately and guided his side to a series winning opener.

23. Anton Lienert-Brown - 6

Unlucky not to start the Test match, Lienert-Brown came on and performed admirably alongside SBW in midfield.
