Match Facts

Wales have won 13 of their last 15 matches against Scotland in the Guinness Six Nations (L2), including six of their seven matches at BT Murrayfield during that run (L1).

Warren Gatland has won each of his 10 matches against Scotland while in charge of Wales; in fact his only defeat against Scotland in the Championship came with Ireland in the 2001 edition of the tournament – a match that ultimately cost Ireland the Grand Slam that year.

Scotland come into this match having won their opening fixture in the Guinness Six Nations for the third year in a row – each of those wins coming against England – however, they went on to lose to Wales in Round 2 in both 2021 and 2022.

Since beating Scotland in Round 2 of last year’s Guinness Six Nations, Wales have gone on to win just twice in 11 matches (L9), losing their last three in a row.

Scotland kicked from hand 42 times in the Guinness Six Nations last weekend, more than any other team, while Wales made the joint fewest kicks from hand (25); however, Wales retained possession from the joint most kicks (4, level with Italy and England) and had the best kick retention rate as a result (16%).

Scotland made the joint fewest 22 entries in the opening round of this year’s Guinness Six Nations (7, level with Italy), however they averaged the most points per entry of any nation (4.1); only France (12) made more 22 entries than Wales (11), however Warren Gatland’s men averaged just 0.9 points per entry, fewer than any other side.

Scotland made the most tackles of any side in the opening round of this year’s Guinness Six Nations (214) and recorded the best tackle success rate (91%); Wales made the second most tackles (184) and recorded the most dominant tackles in Round 1 (23, Scotland 2nd with 18).

Scotland’s Duhan van der Merwe beat 11 defenders in Round 1 of this year’s Six Nations, the most by any player in a match in the Championship since van der Merwe himself beat 13 against Italy in 2021; Wales’ Liam Williams (8) was the only other player to beat more than six defenders during the opening round.

Wales’ Rio Dyer carried for 108 metres from his seven carries in the opening round of this year’s Guinness Six Nations; of the 55 players to make more than six carries in Round 1, Dyer had the best average carry distance (15.4m), followed by Duhan van der Merwe (13.0).

Scotland’s Finn Russell made 18 carries in the opening round of this year’s Guinness Six Nations, the joint most of any player (level with Lewis Ludlam and Ellis Genge), the only fly half to make more carries in a Six Nations fixture was current Scotland Head Coach Gregor Townsend, who made 19 against Italy in 2000.
