The Hurricanes take a 33-24 lead over the Waratahs into halftime. The sides alternated two tries apiece to see the Waratahs up 14-12 after just 15 minutes of play. The Waratahs added a penalty midway through the half to make it a five point ball game. It was all Hurricanes for the next 15 minutes, as the visitors ran in three tries to race into a 33-17 lead. The Waratahs needed a response before halftime and did just that, with a try with the final play keeping them in the match at the break.
