The Referee and TMO deliberated the decision for some time before they came to a decision.
Twitter was somewhat spilt over the call:
Baird in trouble here!. Red card for a high tackle!. He knew he was in trouble for the moment it happened!. We’re really up against it now!. #WorldRugbyU20s #AUSvIRE #FutureIsGreen

Unfortunately the right call, definitely a red. Great officiating. #worldrugbyu20s #AUSvIRE @eirSport

Shocking decision in U20 RWC - never a red. Definite penalty, maybe a yellow at worst. #AUSvIRE #U20WorldCup @WorldRugby

Again the right call unfortunately. Nearest thing to mitigation would be height difference but it's player safety so it's up to the tackler to sort out his technique. #AUSvIRE #WorldRugbyU20s

Incredible decision to give a red card there. No worse than @AustralianRugby high tackle before that. @WorldRugby #ausvIre #U20WC2019
