Wade closes on Ashton try-scorer record

Chris Ashton might be the first try centurion in Premiership Rugby history, but two current players are reeling him in.

The England great called time on his career after scoring a remarkable 101 tries over spells with six different English clubs, while he also scooped the Top 14’s single season record thanks to a one-year spell in France, not to mention his place at the top of the Investec Champions Cup’s all-time record try-scoring charts.

All that gives Ashton a strong case for being the best finisher in recent club rugby history, but he faced plenty of competition for his place at the summit of the English game.

His two closest challengers for Premiership Rugby’s top try-scorers are two more wingers, England pair Tom Varndell and Mark Cueto.

And then in terms of active players, Gloucester Rugby wing Christian Wade and Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care will both have the top three in their sights.

Wade scored a hat-trick against Bristol Bears on Saturday to reach 89 and is openly targeting the record.

Here is how the list stands:

Top 10 try-scorers in Premiership Rugby history

Chris Ashton – 101

Tom Varndell – 92

Mark Cueto – 90

Christian Wade – 89

Danny Care – 85

Jonny May – 78

Steve Hanley – 75

Mike Brown – 72

Matt Banahan – 71

Paul Sackey – 69
