Top 14: Toulouse Stay Top as Racing 92 Make a Huge Jump
- 1490
The Top 14 continued to deliver another weekend of high-scoring rugby, dramatic finishes and significant movement in the league table, with the fifth round of the season providing plenty of talking points.
While Toulouse maintained their position at the top of the standings, Pau and Bayonne continued their impressive starts to the campaign, while Montpellier produced a bonus-point victory to move into the top six. At the other end of the table, Racing 92 finally secured their first home victory of the season and made the biggest jump of the weekend.
With only five rounds completed, the table is already beginning to separate into different groups, although there remains very little between several of the teams.
Toulouse Remain at the Top

Toulouse remain top of the Top 14 after grinding out an 8–7 victory over Castres in the derby at Pierre-Fabre.
It was far from a typical Toulouse performance. A heavily rotated side was sent to Castres, with Toulouse relying on a young team to get the job done in an intensely physical encounter. The match was decided by a single point, with Toulouse's only try coming from Matthis Lebel. Despite scoring just eight points, the visitors managed to hold on for their fourth consecutive victory
The result leaves Toulouse on 19 points, one point clear of Pau at the top of the table.
Their current run of four consecutive victories is also the best winning streak in the competition, alongside Bayonne, who have won their last three after losing their opening match.
Pau and Bayonne Continue to Impress
Pau remain Toulouse's closest challengers after a dramatic 43–40 victory away to Vannes. The result moved Pau into second place on 18 points, just one behind the leaders.
However, the victory was much closer than it initially appeared. Pau raced into a commanding 40–14 lead at half-time, only for Vannes to produce an extraordinary comeback in the second half.
Bayonne also continued their excellent start to the season, defeating Stade Français 35–32.
The victory moved Bayonne onto 17 points and into third place, completing a remarkable turnaround after losing their opening match of the campaign.
Bayonne have now won three matches in succession and are just two points behind Toulouse.
Racing 92 Finally Find Their Home Form

One of the biggest stories of the weekend came from Racing 92.
After losing their opening two home matches against Bayonne and Lyon, Racing finally got their first victory at their temporary home in Créteil, defeating Perpignan 55–25.
The result was emphatic, with Racing scoring eight tries in a dominant attacking display and was enough to send Racing from 13th to ninth, making them the biggest climbers of the round.
Racing 92 had collected only one victory from their opening four matches, but a 30-point victory provides them with a significant boost heading into the next round.
Montpellier Break Into the Top Six
Montpellier produced one of the strongest defensive performances of the weekend, defeating Toulon 28–0 in difficult conditions at the Mosson.
Heavy rain made attacking rugby difficult during the first half, with Montpellier taking only a 6–0 lead into the interval.
However, the home side eventually broke Toulon's resistance after half-time. A dominant performance from the Montpellier pack produced three tries, including a double from Wilfrid Hounkpatin and another from Christopher Tolofua.
The victory was also bonus-point success, giving Montpellier five points and moving them into the top six.
Bordeaux Begles Respond in Style

The result was particularly important after UBB's defeat away to Perpignan in the previous round.
Bordeaux were already in control at half-time, scoring six tries and taking a commanding lead into the break. They eventually reached 51 points to secure an emphatic victory.
The result leaves UBB fourth in the table on 15 points, while Lyon drop to sixth on 14.
It continues an interesting trend for Bordeaux this season: their home performances have been considerably stronger than their results away from home.
La Rochelle Back Among the Challengers
La Rochelle also strengthened their position with a convincing 38–13 victory over Clermont.
The result gives La Rochelle three victories from their opening five matches and moves them onto 13 points.
After suffering a heavy defeat to Pau in the previous round, La Rochelle responded strongly against Clermont and remain within touching distance of the leading group.
Clermont, meanwhile, remain on 10 points and sit in seventh.
Urdapilleta Makes History

Away from the league table, one of the most significant moments of the weekend belonged to Perpignan fly-half Benjamin Urdapilleta.
Despite Perpignan's heavy defeat to Racing 92, Urdapilleta made history by becoming the highest points scorer of the professional era in the French Championship.
His total reached 2,619 points, surpassing the previous record during the match in Créteil.
It was a remarkable individual achievement in a weekend that otherwise belonged to Racing 92.
