The Rugby Championship Round 3 Highlights: Australia v South Africa
- 2291
Another nail-biting game between these two sides after two draws last year. The Wallabies get the edge in their first clash of 2018 by just 5 points. The Wallabies came out flying in the opening minutes of the game after a number of disruptions before kick off with David Pocock, Adam Coleman and Israel Folau all withdrawing from the team announced earlier in the week. Michael Hooper powered over the line in the opening two minutes of the match. The Springboks replied well with an Elton Jantjies penalty before Bongi Mbonambi scored. Makazole Mapimpi extended the Springboks lead to 8 points before Matt Toomua scored an opportunistic try after Mbonambi failed to find Siya Kolisi from a lineout near his line. Reece Hodge made it a one-point ball game at halftime with a huge penalty kick. Matt Toomua converted two penalties in a largely uneventfully second half. The Springboks attacked with intent but the Wallabies held out for the win.
