The Mercurial Michalak's First Run In Blue
- 2304
It has been 19 years since the mercurial talent that is Frederic Michalak first took the field for France.
Since then, the fly-half (who is more than capable in the number 9 jersey too) has wowed audience with his unique and distinctly creative approach to the game.
Over a sixteen year international career, Michalak won 77 caps for France, a massive 209 for Toulouse, 72 for Toulon and 18 for Lyon. He was also a favourite in Durban, South Africa, where he turned out 30 times for the Sharks in the Currie Cup competition.
Michalak was just 19 when he guided Toulouse to victory against Montferrand and, in so doing, his side were crowned champions of France. His efforts in the French domestic club scene could not be ignored by the national selectors who included the youngster in the team to face South Africa in Paris in 2001.
The diminutive playmaker trotted on in the second half and gave a good account of himself, even summoning up the courage to attempt a drop-goal.
