- 737
Super Rugby kicked off with a thriller as the Highlanders finished the match strongly to snatch a 30-27 away win over the Chiefs in the opening round. It was all Highlanders at the start as they crossed for the first try, but the Chiefs responded with two tries in quick succession to lead 12-7. The hosts grew into the game and went over for a third score to extend their advantage, but the Highlanders kicked a penalty on the stroke of halftime to trail 19-10 at the break. The Highlanders slotted a penalty early in the second half, but the Chiefs hit back with a try to lead 24-13 which they held heading into the final quarter. The Highlanders got right back into the match with a try closing the gap to just four points, but they then picked up a red card with the resulting penalty seeing the Chiefs lead by seven. A Highlanders penalty shortly after with ten minutes to play reduced the deficit back to four points. The comeback was complete as the 14 man Highlanders scored their third try with around five minutes to play to sneak the victory.
