The opening game of round 3 started between the Queensland Reds and the Western Force at the Suncorp Stadium. Both teams were searching for the much needed victory in order to register their first win of the new format. McGregor scored the first try and points of the game for the Western Force. The Force dominated the proceedings in the first 20 minutes. Ralston scored for the Force in the 14th minute after a brilliant team play starting from Lance. The Reds, however, scored their first points in the 19th minute when Paenga went over the goal line. The Force captain Ian Prior went off in the 22nd minute due to injury and was replaced by Jacob Abel. The game became an equal affair until Ralston intercepted a ball 7m from his goal line to score the third try for the Force. Lance kick was however charged down by Daugunu. The Reds started the second half the strongest of the two teams. Daugunu scored only their third try of the game, 6 minutes after halftime ended. Paisami was sent to the sin bin for a above the horizontal tackle in the 69th minute. The last 10 minutes proved to be the vital for the Reds as Ready went over to score for the Force and needed Lance to convert to go within a point of the Reds. He, however, missed the kick. In the 79th minute O' Connor dropped into the pocket to score a drop goal to extend their lead to 7 points. Full time: Queensland Reds 31-24 Western Force.
