Suntory Sungoliath confirm the signing of Damian McKenzie

Japanese League One club Suntory Sungoliath have confirmed the signing of All Blacks back Damian McKenzie from the Chiefs.

McKenzie heads to the Tokyo based side following Beauden Barrett's stint with the club, with Barrett helping the side reach the final of the Top League.

The 26-year-old's contract with New Zealand Rugby expires at the end of the current year meaning that there is uncertainty around whether he will return to the Chiefs or New Zealand next year. TJ Perenara was in a similar situation with the Hurricanes earlier this year before signing a new deal.

McKenzie's departure to Japan comes after the confirmation of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific Squad Announcements.

“I am looking forward to joining the Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath in the inaugural Japan Rugby League One competition,” McKenzie said

“I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and contribute to the Sungoliath culture as well as engaging with the Japanese fans.

“I love attacking rugby and I really look forward to playing an exciting brand of rugby. Off-field I look forward to experiencing the Japanese culture.

“I hope to see everyone at full stadiums soon. Arigato.”
