RWC 2015 Throwback: Hurt Lambie desperate to make up for Springboks embarrassment
- 1216
Pat Lambie says he and the rest of a "hurting" South Africa squad are desperate to get back on the pitch and make amends for their humiliating Rugby World Cup defeat to Japan.
Eddie Jones' Japan side caused one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history when a last-gasp Karne Hesketh try earned a shock 34-32 Pool B win over the Springboks in Brighton.
South Africa have little time to lick their wounds, with their next game coming against Samoa at Villa Park on Saturday.
Fly-half Lambie admitted the Japan loss has stung South Africa, but is keen to switch the focus on getting a positive result in Birmingham.
"Certainly since I've been involved with the Springboks it's brought the best out of the group when you've had our backs against the wall," he said.
"All our focus is on Saturday against Samoa and we really want to make things right.
"It's very important to get back out there now. I think all the players are looking forward to getting our team review over and done with this afternoon and getting out on to the training field and moving on.
"We really are looking forward to making this right. We are all hurting more than ever before."
Lambie's sentiments were echoed by team-mate Jesse Kriel, who added: "Obviously we were very disappointed with the result and how we played.
"But the great thing about rugby is you have got another opportunity this weekend to go and make things right, so I think that's where everyone is at. Obviously we are going to review the game and go forward from there."
