Report: Three rounds of Premiership midweek matches planned

Premiership clubs could face three rounds of midweek fixtures in order to finish the season by the end of October according to a report by Standard Sport.

The three-midweek slots pencilled in for the clubs would take place on August 24, September 7 and September 21 with the aim for the Premiership final to be on October 24, with the midweek games in place to ensure that can happen.

The current plan is for the competition to return to action in the middle of August while clubs are currently working their way back into full training and fitness.

The last Premiership fixture to take place was in March earlier this year with Bristol running out 28-15 victors over Harlequins.

Exeter Chiefs currently top the Premiership table and are five points ahead of Sale Sharks with a number of clubs set to benefit from players signed for the 2020/21 season joining their new clubs once the season is back underway.

Elsewhere, the PRO14 has confirmed a return to play date as well as a reduced format. The competition is aiming to resume on August 22 all five competing territories.

Meanwhile, Super Rugby in New Zealand and Australia has resumed under new formats in the form of Super Rugby Aotearoa and Super Rugby Au with South Africa expected to follow suite.
