REPORT: Home Lions Tour Looks Like The Only Option

The British and Irish Lions are likely to face the threat of cancellation if they do not play South Africa in the UK and Ireland this summer, according to a report by Sports Mail.

According to the report, the home unions are pushing hard for the contingency of playing the tour out in the UK and Ireland to be adopted with it now accepted that the tour cannot take place in South Africa.

There have been calls for the tour to be rescheduled to 2022 but the latest indications are that this scenario is facing overwhelming opposition within many official circles.

Sportsmail sources have suggested that there is growing acceptance that the existing slot must be used or the whole event will be abandoned.

It is understood that World Rugby have no desire to mediate and help to broker a complex deal which would involve re-arranging 2022 Test tours which have already been provisionally agreed.

Meanwhile, an online petition has been started to prevent the Tour from taking place in the UK and Ireland.

The petition has slowly gathered pace with over 1 700 signatures at the time of writing this. The main point of the petition is the estimated 3.1 billion Rand (about £150 million) injection into the South African economy that would be missed.
