Preview: Gloucester vs Worcester

On Saturday afternoon, Worcester make the trip to the west-country to take on Gloucester at Kingsholm. Both sides have enjoyed a mixed start to the season, and will be hungry for victory in what should be an open match of rugby.

Gloucester have looked good in their previous two outings, and if not for a late Owen Farrell penalty last week against Saracens, they would be top of the table. They line out much the same as last week, as James Hook continues at ten, partnering Kiwi Willie Heinz at halfback. A strong looking Gloucester back line includes the likes of Billy Twelvetrees in the centre, and Charlie Sharples and Jonny May in the outside backs. Up front, Richard Hibbard and John Afoa continue in the front row, while Ben Morgan packs down at number 8 in a pack with plenty of ballast.

Worcester have looked competitive early on this year, beating Northampton courtesy of a last minute drop goal in their opening game of the season. Disappointment followed last week at the hands of Sale, as they succumbed to a four try rout away from home, so they will be desperate to get back on track this week. The Worcester pack has an Irish feel to it, with ex Ireland U20 captain Niall Annett starting at hooker, and Donncha O’Callaghan coming in at second row. In the backs, Tom Heathcote pulls the strings at out half, while the pace of Cooper Vuna and Tom Biggs out wide will cause problems.

Worcester have won just once in their last 28 away fixtures in this competition, a run that stretches back to New Years day 2012. This doesn’t bode well for the Warriors but they will travel to Kingsholm buoyed by their good start to the season. Expect a close contest, and follow with us on Ultimate Rugby from 2 o’clock GMT.
