Magpies put up passionate defence of the Log o' Wood

The Magpies ascended to the summit of the Championship table and retaining the ‘Log o’ Wood’.

Emotions ran high as the game boiled over into scuffles at the final whistle as Hawke’s passionately defended the Ranfurly Shield.

The Magpies came out firing, building a 27-point score in the first half while defending their line admirably, limiting Wellington’s score to a brace of penalties courtesy of Caleb Makene.

Wellington made a game of it in the second stanza, however, dotting down twice, but their opponents refused to be denied and threw their bodies on the line to maintain their lead until the final whistle sounded with the score at 34-18.
