Key Moments: Springboks v Ireland
- 1465
Ireland trained once between the loss at Loftus and then win at Kings Park. While that may be a good recipe here are some of the key moments in the game that saw Ireland level the series.
3' Eben Etzebeth looks to make defensive impact:
Etzebeth shot up twice on defence in the opening minutes, first time resulted in a scrum and the second a penalty and Ireland take a 0-3 lead 5 mins in.
11' Poor Springbok line out costs them:
Springboks lose a line out and Ireland set the platform. McCarthy beats Mostert and makes meters into the Bok 22. Murray is on the end of it later for the opening try of the game.
27' Big three minutes of lost opportunities:
The Springboks had three opportunities to gain points, firstly off a flat pass by Pollard that saw Kolbe fumble, secondly when Ireland stopped Kwagga Smith a minute later and thirdly when Sita Kolisi knocked on 5m out after multiple phases of attack. The home side will look back at that and realised that should have got at least three points from there
32' Joe McCarthy maul steal:
De Allende beats three defenders off a scrum free kick, the Springboks earn a penalty and attacking line out only for Joe McCarthy to get in and steal the ball.
40' Pieter-Steph du Toit strength:
du Toit stops Doris a few meters out on the try line off a scrum, massive effort by the flanker as Ireland only get three from that attack.
45' Springboks getting into their groove:
Pollard kicks and Arendse chases to wrap up Nash and win a penalty. From the resulting line out they mount phase attack and Doris is penalised for a croc roll. Pollard brings the home side within 4 points at 12-16.
54' Crowley makes an excellent read on defence:
Th eSpringboks secure the ball after a Pollard kick. Snyman gets his arms around a defender and plays Marx into the open. Smith runs off Marx's shoulder and Crowley makes a last second call and shifts to Smith and kills the move.
67' Frawley Magic Part 1:
Frawley somehow keeps a kick to touch in field, Ireland the pressure Feinberg-Mngomezulu into an error which results in a lin eout penalty.
70' Frawley Magic Part 2:
Ireland held up over the line and restart with a goal line drop out. Frawley slots a long range drop goal to have the score at 24-22
78' O'Mahony Moment (and Frawley Magic Part 3):
The Springboks are in the Irish half and on attack. O'Mahony puts in a huge hit on van staden and forces a knock on.
Ireland use the Sexton loop from the scrum and make it into the opposition half, they grubber ahead and Feinberg-Mngomezulu takes the ball into touch.
From the line out Frawley positions himself in th emiddle of the field and slots the winning drop goal with incredible skill.
