JWC: Ireland's McCarthy out for rest of tournament
Ireland have been dealt a major blow with the loss of their U20 captain Nick McCarthy for the remainder of the U20 World Championship.

McCarthy suffered a shoulder injury during Ireland’s final game in Pool C against New Zealand, a 25-3 defeat which saw their chances of making the semi-finals come to an end.

Ireland are due to face Wales on Monday in the battle claim fifth place, with the second row Josh Murphy taking over the captaincy duties from McCarthy.

Scrum-half Jack Cullen of Munster has been called up to the squad for Monday’s game and possibly the fifth place final to come afterwards against Australia or Scotland if Ireland progress.

Ireland won their first two pool stage matches against Argentina and Scotland in a promising tournament for Nigel Carolan’s young squad.

Monday’s clash with Wales will take place at the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella in Viadana.
