James Horwill appointed to Queensland Rugby Union Board

Former Reds and Wallabies captain James Horwill has today been appointed to the Board of the Queensland Rugby Union as the Rugby Union Players Association-nominated Director.

He replaces former Wallaby Pat Howard, who has taken up a role with the Australian Sports Commission.

Mr Horwill, QRU#1184 and Wallaby#819, had a storied rugby career. He was capped 116 times for his State and 62 times for his country, captaining both.

He led the Reds to their memorable 2011 Super Rugby championship and captained the Wallabies in his first Rugby World Cup in 2011 and in the 2015 series against the British and Irish Lions.

He played four seasons with Harlequins in the English Premiership, his last two as captain. He also played for the victorious Cambridge team in the 2019 Varsity Game while completing his Master of  Business Administration at Queens College.

He is currently Group General Manager - Global Aftermarket Sales and Marketing at EGR Automotive, a Queensland firm which is a global leader in the automotive accessories industry.

Mr Horwill said: "I am thrilled to join the Board of the Queensland Rugby Union at such a critical and exciting time for rugby in Australia. With a number of major rugby events on the horizon, we have an incredible opportunity to grow and develop the sport."

QRU Chair Brett Clark said Mr Horwill brought both high-level sports and corporate experience to the Board.

“James is undoubtedly one of Queensland rugby’s finest players this century and he will be a tremendous addition to helping guide the high-performance strategy of the QRU,” he said.

“He is also very experienced in corporate life in a growing business career.”
