Wellington crossed for two early tries against the run of play before Canterbury hit back with a score of their own. A late first half Wellington penalty extended their lead to 17-7 at the break. Two tries, both from charge downs early in the second half made it 31-7 to the hosts. Canterbury responded with their second try to give themselves some hope at 31-14, but Wellington kicked a penalty soon after for a twenty point lead. It was one way traffic thereafter, as Wellington ran in a further four tries in the final 15 minutes to seal an emphatic victory.
