French Clubs Begin Legal Proceedings Against World Rugby

The Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR), the governing body of the TOP14 and PROD2 has commenced legal proceedings against World Rugby according to a report by Owen Slot at The Times.

The fall-out between World Rugby and the clubs has escalated further following the confirmation of a seven-week test window from October with the regular window normally just three weeks.

World Rugby confirmed today that the World Rugby Council approved a temporary adjustment to Regulation 9 to accommodate the release of international players for revised 2020 windows.

The legal proceedings have escalated further according to the report by Owen Slot, with French clubs firing the first shot with a legal letter sent in advance of the World Rugby Council vote today.

For the purpose of its extended test window this year, World Rugby wanted Regulation 9 to be extended from three weeks to seven with the French clubs now seeking to oppose the decision made by World Rugby as well as seek compensation for the loss of players during that period.

The legal action comes as another set back for a global calendar for test and club rugby which would make the test window stretch from October to November permanently - a move that the French feel would be detrimental to the club with England sympathizing.
