European Rugby Challenge Cup winners Montpellier have confirmed the signing of La Rochelle centre Geoffrey Doumayrou as they look to build on their European success in next season’s Champions Cup.
The 31-year-old played the entire 80 minutes at outside centre for his current side in their 22-17 final defeat at the hands of Toulouse and has been a huge factor in the club’s rise to the pinnacle of European club rugby.
The French international played 342 minutes during the current Heineken Champions Cup campaign and scored two tries in a 45-21 quarter-final victory over Gallagher Premiership side Sale Sharks.
In total, Doumayrou has amassed 15 tries in his European career to date – across both the Heineken Champions and Challenge Cups – scoring 75 points.
Doumayrou began his professional career at the club in 2009 before moving to Stade Français in 2012.
“I am very happy to come back to the club that formed me, the town where I took my first steps in the TOP 14,” Doumayrou told the Montpellier official website after signing a two-year deal.
“I am coming back almost 10 years later with the desire to take up this new challenge.”
“We are very happy that Geoffrey is coming back,” added coach Philippe Saint-Andre.
“He is a great competitor and an experienced player who will bring us a lot both in terms of his intrinsic qualities and in developing our young players.”
