Controversial late time wasting call costs Wallabies

Jordie Barrett's match-winning try sealed New Zealand's 39-37 victory over Australia on Thursday in what was a truly remarkable Bledisloe Cup contest.

The youngest All Black Barrett broke Australian hearts with his score out wide from a scrum but it was the decision of the referee Mathieu Raynal to penalise Bernard Foley for time-wasting that stole the spotlight.

Foley failed to kick Australia's penalty to touch quick enough, for Raynal's liking, which resulted in a free-kick to the All Blacks with a minute to play.

The All Blacks opted for a scrum which eventually led to Barrett's try. 


After the scrum, Richie Mo'unga spread the ball out to Will Jordan who did brilliantly to offload the ball to Jordie Barrett in contact with the fullback sealing the win.


It was a dramatic finish to the match in which New Zealand had squandered an 18-point lead.

In the final 10 minutes, Pete Samu exchanged passes with Marika Koroibete and reached the corner, allowing Foley to level the match at 34-34.

Nic White then expertly took over from Foley by slotting over a long-range penalty to give the home side a barely believable three-point lead.

The All Blacks had a chance to steal a win with a lineout inside the Wallabies half but the Australians stopped their driving maul and won a penalty, seemingly spelling the end of the game, only for Foley to be sensationally penalised for wasting time, gifting New Zealand a scrum and ultimately the win.
