Colin Slade knocked out and taken to hospital after Pau's win over La Rochelle

Colin Slade spent a night in hospital after another concussion but Pau has reassured fans the former All Black is "fine".

Slade scored eight points in Pau's 18-15 home win over La Rochelle on Saturday before he was stretchered off after his head struck the leg of Pierre Bourgarit.

L'Equipe reported had a recent history of concussions saying: "He had to end his season in March, after three successive concussions,"

However, the Pau club issued a statement on Twitter, saying Slade - who was taken to hospital for observation - had been released and was in good spirits.

"He's fine," the club wrote on Twitter. "He will have to observe a rest period the duration of which has not yet been established."

The club said Slade had passed concussion protocols, including a head scan.

Pau president Bernard Pontneau told the France Bleu Béarn radio station: "All the indicators are green. Colin is recovering from a big shock, he has been opened to the scalp." 

Pontneau felt it was "a dangerous action", saying players should be careful "when the ball is next to the head of a guy".

The Paul president said Slade missed the last two months of the 2016-17 season after his series of concussions, but had had "nothing for a year".

"His condition will not be stopped too long  but [he will have] a mandatory two-week break."

The former Crusaders and Highlanders first five-eighth, who won 21 All Black caps between 2010 and 2015, scored a try against La Rochelle and kicked a conversion and a penalty before leaving the field early in the second half.
