Brodie Retallick ruled out of Chiefs clash with the Hurricanes

Brodie Retallick didn't attend the Chiefs training because of concussion symptoms and is one of the many Chiefs players that will not face the Hurricanes in Wellington on Friday night.

Coach Dave Rennie said he was "freshening some guys up and the hope is that everyone is ready to go by Friday", but confirmed Retallick would sit out the local derby at Westpac Stadium, despite him having passed a head injury assessment during the 46-31 win over the Waratahs in Hamilton on Saturday.

"He took a knock, obviously, in the weekend, and he still had a headache yesterday, so not enough time to pass the protocols, so he's out for the weekend," Rennie said, feeling it was probably unlikely to be a worry ahead of the All Blacks' series against the British and Irish Lions and rule him out for much more than this week.

"I don't think so. He did pass the test and we could have put him back on, but we erred on the side of caution there, so I'm happy we did that. He said he's not feeling too bad, but we're not going to risk that."

Retallick's injury adds to the several question marks around All Blacks players, as Steve Hansen gets set to name his squad on Thursday. Dane Coles (concussion), Jerome Kaino (knee), Liam Squire (thumb) and Kieran Read (thumb) are already sidelined, while Ryan Crotty (ribs) and Ben Smith (concussion) took knocks at the weekend.

"It's a real pity, he's massive for us, obviously, just all the grunt work that he does," Rennie said of Retallick. "It just means an opportunity for someone else, and they're going to have to step up."
