B&I Lions turn to Government for help to host series against South Africa

Following the halt of their planned tour of South Africa due to COVID-19, the British and Irish Lions have now turned to the Government for help to stage a home 'tour' against world champions the Springboks.

According to Dailymail, the Lions have made an official request to the Government to underwrite a home 'tour' this summer, culminating in a Test series against South Africa.

It is understood that a board meeting was held last Thursday to discuss contingencies for the Covid-disrupted event, with the Lions approaching the Government to obtain financial guarantees which would clear the way for arrangements to be made for fixtures in Britain and Ireland.

The “home tour” has become a more enticing proposition for the Lions following the government announcement on Monday that bumper crowds may return to sporting events in June.

The planned tour of South Africa will not happen because the country has not yet launched a vaccination programme.
