Argentine side set to join the Currie Cup

South Africa's premier provincial rugby competition, The Currie Cup, could add an Argentine side to its participants by 2019.

The president of the UAR Marcelo Rodríguez along with other members of the UAR board met with SARU president Mark Alexander to further discuss the possibility of an Argentine team in the Currie Cup. 

This would not be the first time that an Argentine side featured in a South African rugby competition with the Pampas XV having featured in the Vodacom Cup.

In an interview with the La Nacion Rodríguez revealed the UAR's intentions of joining the competition saying:

"We are working hard to try to access the Currie Cup in 2019. We are in an advanced process that has to follow an instance of a logical decision on the part of the SARU, but until now we have received all the support and goodwill,"

"On our part, we are still studying a set of issues to resolve, which have to do with logistics and the budgetary impact."

The Currie Cup is a step up from the Vodacom Cup, now known as the Supersport Rugby Challenge, and will provide Argentina with a stepping stone between club rugby, the Argentina XV and Super Rugby. 

"We are working hard to have a financial model that allows us to close this participation," Rodriguez added. "We are very optimistic, I think we are going to reach a good port, we are going to have at least two more meetings at the end of the year, South Africa also needs to go through these decision processes: for how long would the link be, where would we locate, define rights and obligations that concern us ".
