seems that I was wrong about that. After the format change they stopped the lower ranked second place teams from dropping into the challenge cup. So no, Saints can not qualify.

Not for the champions cup, but if they win and castres lose to Leinster then they would qualify for the challenge cup I think.

Can Northampton still qualify with a win ?
