Sir Gordon coached the All Blacks Sevens at more than 100 international sevens tournaments since taking over the side in 1994.
In 2012 he received the rare honour of being inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, which is deemed as unusual for a still serving coach and the first sevens coach to receive such an honour, and was knighted for his contribution to rugby 12 months later.
In September 2016, after leading New Zealand to four Commonwealth Games gold medals, 12 World Rugby Sevens Series titles and two Rugby World Cup Sevens titles, becoming the most successful coach of all time in the 7s game, Gordons decided to step down from the coaching role for "a fresh challenge".
