Ryan played club rugby with Nottingham and West Hartlepool before working at St Edward’s School in Oxford as a PE teacher.
He moved back into rugby and swiftly became a sevens specialist, taking charge of the England Sevens in 2007 and became their longest serving coach of all time, including guiding them to a first World Cup final in 20 years.
After stepping down in 2013, he made the unlikely move to steer the Fiji 7s team where he shot fame.
The Englishman guided the country's first ever Olympic Sevens gold medal at the Rio Olympics in only his second tournament in charge, setting the highest ever record of tournament titles won by a Fiji Sevens coach with 9.
After the achievement, Ryan stepped down as Fiji coach and took up a role as a consultant for the Wales Rugby Union in January 2017.
